Greetings to everyone!
In this post I am going to show you a fresh speaking activity which focuses on several target languages. The context that I took is "life goals".
Level: Intermediate and above
TL 1: to set a goal
TL 2: Idiom "it's a safe bet"
TL3: words and expressions to describe successful completion of an action/activity (to manage, to make it to do smth, to succeed, to )
TL 3: words and expressions to describe failure (to fail to do smth, not to manage, not to make it)
Task. Imagine that the people below have set the same life goals. You know that one of them will succeed while the other will fail. Give possible reasons why. Use the example.
Example:
Teacher: Steve and Alex have set a goal to become politicians.
Student: It's a safe bet that Steve will succeed/make it to/ manage to become a politician because (e.g. he can persuade people). Alex won't make it to/will fail to/won't manage to become a politician because (e.g. he isn't good at politics)
LET'S START!
TEACHER:
1. Emma and Walter have set a goal to shoot films.
2. Patrick and Susan have set a goal to launch an Internet trade business.
3. Larry and Bernard have set a goal to take part in a TV quiz.
4. Tom and Oliver have set a goal to take a post-graduate course.
5. Jim and Amanda have set a goal to move abroad.
Good luck with this one!
Yours,
YK xo
