Hi everyone! I have been working a lot lately at developing Business English materials in order to launch a short-term online course for teachers. The idea came up to me after regular requests and questions I have been getting from different countries. In e-mails and messages teachers usually ask me to give them some ideas as they simply don't know where to start teaching from when it comes to Business English. Ten years ago I found myself in a similar situation. So there is nothing to be ashamed or afraid of.
While my online project is in the making, let me show you one of my latest Speaking activities for elementary-intermediate adult students. I developed it a couple of weeks ago.
This activity motivates students to think of different ways people of different professions can CASH IN ON and how they can possibly spend this money.
Target Language 1: Phrasal verb TO CASH IN (ON)
Target Language 2: Professions
Target Language 3: Business activities and types of economic activity.
Target Language 4: Everyday life activities and needs.
Target Language 5: Present Simple + Past Simple
Task. Make up mini-dialogues using the example.
Example:
Student: Adam is a business coach. Last year he cashed in on giving webinars for foreign businessmen.
Teacher: How did he spend the money?
Student: He set up a new company.
Patrick (an architect) Amanda (an estate agent) Lucy (a web designer)
Eric (a mechanic) Mary (a French teacher) Paul (a driver) Steve ( a film director)
Ben (a photographer) Justin ( a singer) Polly (an actress) Bella (an artist)
* You can add as many professions to this list as you wish to adapt this exercise to higher levels.
Good luck at your English classes!
Yours,
YK xo
